Embodied Conversational Agents for Chronic Diseases: Scoping Review (Preprint)

ABSTRACT
<sec> <title>BACKGROUND</title> Embodied conversational agents (ECAs) are computer-generated animated humanlike characters that interact with users through verbal and nonverbal behavioral cues. They increasingly used in a range of fields, including health care. </sec> <title>OBJECTIVE</title> This scoping review aims to identify the current practice development evaluation ECAs for chronic diseases. <title>METHODS</title> We applied methodological framework this review. A total 6 databases (ie, PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, ACM Digital Library, IEEE Xplore Web Science) were searched using combination terms related October 2023. Two independent reviewers selected studies extracted data. followed PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items Systematic Reviews Meta-Analyses Extension Scoping Reviews) statement. <title>RESULTS</title> The literature search found 6332 papers, which 36 (0.57%) met inclusion criteria. Among studies, 27 (75%) originated from United States, 28 (78%) published 2020 onward. reported covered wide diseases, focus on cancers, atrial fibrillation, type 2 diabetes, primarily promote screening self-management. Most depicted as middle-aged women based screenshots communicated voice behavior. most frequently outcomes acceptability effectiveness. <title>CONCLUSIONS</title> provides valuable insights technology developers care professionals regarding implementation ECAs. It emphasizes importance technological advances embodiment, personalized strategy, communication modality requires in-depth knowledge user preferences appearance, animation, intervention content. Future should incorporate measures cost, efficiency, productivity provide comprehensive benefits
