ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to explore our hypothesis that MRI-guided focused ultrasound therapy for the treatment uterine fibroids will lead a significant reduction in symptoms and improvement quality life. We describe applications method monitoring thermal energy deposited fibroids, including MRI parameters required, prospective review 108 treatments.Patients presenting with symptomatic who attained minimal symptom severity score would otherwise have been offered hysterectomy were recruited. Thermal lesions created within target using an system. developing lesion monitored real-time MR thermometry, which used assess outcome real time change achieve desired outcome. Fibroid volume, fibroid symptoms, quality-of-life scores measured before 6 months after treatment. Adverse events actively recorded. In study, 79.3% women had treated reported their on follow-up health-related questionnaires, supports hypothesis. mean volume at 13.5%, but nonenhancing (mean, 51 cm(3)) remained months. This early description includes data shows that, although is moderate, it correlates response encouraging.
