ABSTRACT
Introduction: Caring for a person with advanced disease can have detrimental impact on the quality of life family caregivers. This is further compounded in rural areas that few or no palliative care services. Hope has positive influence caregivers persons cancer but factors influencing hope specifically women not been examined.Purpose: The purpose this study was to determine caring cancer, by examining relationship demographic variables, self-efficacy, guilt, and caregiver physical mental health. Methods: A cross-sectional prospective correlational design used. Inclusion criteria were: (a) female, (b) 18 years age older, (c) diagnosed (d) home address postal code, (e) English-speaking. Using modified Dillman technique, surveys an invitation participate were mailed 780 living using two western Canadian provincial registries. reminder card sent 4 weeks later. asked give survey their primary complete. Surveys included measures (Herth Index (HHI)), general self-efficacy (General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES)), grief (Non Death Version Revised Grief Experience Inventory (NDRGEI)), health (Short Form Health Survey 2 (SF-12v2)), data such as whom caring. Data entered into Statistical Package Social Sciences v19 (SPSS) analyzed generalized linear modeling.Results: Significant (p≤0.05) HHI scores GSES (p≤0.0001), NDRGEI subscale (p=0.001), SF-12v2 summary (p=0.002). Participants higher GSES, lower NDRGEI, had scores. mean score 43.30 (standard deviation (SD)=4.63) below 25th percentile (46.53) US population norms. 45.24 (SD=5.98) just above norms (45.13).Conclusion: scores, perceptions loss confidence ability deal difficult situations (self-efficacy). significant relationships found between health, guilt provide foundation future research underscore importance low are concern highlight need support population.Key words: caregivers, hope, life, women.
