ABSTRACT
Youth with type 1 diabetes face long-term risks of health complications the disease. Little is known about patients' and parents' knowledge, acquisition information, family communication regarding these complications. This paper reports qualitative analyses parental focus-group discussions this topic.A total 47 participants (30 mothers, 14 fathers, 3 others) representing 33 children between ages 8 18 years participated in 13 focus groups. Open-ended questions focused on amount information presented to parents by care professionals at different time points, as well way that was presented. Questions also elicited details parent-child exposure misconceptions complications.Qualitative analysis transcribed groups revealed experienced significant anxiety complications, a shift from concern daily management tasks over time. Participants desired flexible, collaborative educational approach, especially timing relative child's age duration diabetes. Many wanted more sensitive emotional support providers. Motivating appeared be particular challenge; burnout regard reported. Knowledge gained many ways, yet misinformation uncommon.Obtaining an important process changes course disease developmental level. More research needed, youth learning, beliefs
