ABSTRACT
OBJECTIVE Few validated measures exist to evaluate self-management of diabetes in families with limited English proficiency. The present study evaluated the psychometric properties and factorial equivalence a Spanish translation parent report version Diabetes Self-Management Profile (DSMP-Parent-Sp). RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Hispanic youth (mean 13.7 years old) type 1 were recruited from three clinics South Florida represented wide range nationalities acculturation levels. A total 127 parents reported on their child's behaviors using either original DSMP-Parent (59.8%) or DSMP-Parent-Sp (40.2%). In addition, DSMP English, physicians rated perceptions youth's self-management. Glycemic control was indexed by A1C past 3 months collected medical chart review. RESULTS Item analysis confirmed that items related overall composite score expected ways, internal consistency estimates adequate. Paired correlations demonstrated strong parent-child concordance significant relationship physician Evidence concurrent convergent validity, as well “strict invariance,” demonstrated. CONCLUSIONS These preliminary findings indicate is reliable valid measure youths. there evidence translated may be considered equivalent when used diabetes.
