ABSTRACT
OBJECTIVE Altered immune reactivity precedes and accompanies type 1 2 diabetes. We hypothesized that the metabolic phenotype relates to systemic cellular status. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS A total of 194 metabolically well-controlled patients with diabetes (n = 62, mean duration 1.29 years) or 132, 1.98 60 normoglycemic persons underwent blood sampling for automated white cell counting (WBC) flow cytometry. Whole-body insulin sensitivity was measured hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp tests. RESULTS Patients had higher WBC counts than control subjects along a percentage T cells activated helper (Th) cytotoxic (Tc) but lower proportions natural killer (NK) cells. In diabetes, Th Tc also compared subjects, whereas ratio regulatory (Treg) lower, suggesting diminished capacity. Parameters glycemic related positively Treg only in Upon age, sex, body mass adjustments, correlated monocytes, while circulating lipids subsets CONCLUSIONS Immune phenotypes showed distinct frequencies occurrence both types associate sensitivity, glycemia, lipidemia.
