Trends in Diabetes Incidence: The Framingham Heart Study

ABSTRACT
Obesity and type 2 diabetes continue to increase in prevalence the U.S. Whether incidence continues recent times is less well documented. We examined trends over previous four decades.Framingham Heart Study participants ages 40-55 years free of at baseline (n = 4,795; mean age 45.3 years; 51.6% women) were followed for development 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s. Diabetes was defined as either fasting glucose ≥126 mg/dL or use antidiabetes medication. Poisson regression used calculate sex-specific rates a 47-year-old individual each decade. Rates also calculated among obese, overweight, normal weight individuals.The annualized per 1,000 individuals 2.6, 3.8, 4.7, 3.0 (women) 3.4, 4.5, 7.4, 7.3 (men) 2000s, respectively. Compared with age- sex-adjusted relative risks 1.37 (95% CI 0.87-2.16; P 0.17), 1.99 1.30-3.03; 0.001), 1.81 1.16-2.82; 0.01) risk 2000s 0.85 0.61-1.20; 0.36).In our community-based sample, new-onset continued be higher compared 1970s. In past decade, remained steady despite ongoing trend rising adiposity.
