ABSTRACT
Effective conservation of threatened biota relies on accurate assessments and scientific guidance. As an unfortunate example, Chinese giant salamanders ( Andrias, CGS) remain critically endangered in nature. Misguided efforts, e.g., commercial propagation releasing millions likely non-indigenous or interspecific hybrids, have further compromised initiatives. Limited information wild populations CGS poses a significant challenge. Following 18-month long field monitoring, we now report the discovery population closed nature reserve Jiangxi Province, China. Genomic reveal its genetic distinctiveness do not detect admixture with other species. Based morphological molecular evidences, describe this as new species Andrias jiangxiensissp. nov. This is only known today genetically pure, reproducing, situ population. emphasizes important role that reserves play protecting species, necessity integrating long-term monitoring assessments. It sets pathway for discovering conserving especially those biotas are similarly being extirpated by anthropogenic translocations overexploitation. .
