Interlinkages of Literacy and Household Poverty in India: Inter-District and Socio-Demographic Disparities

ABSTRACT
Poverty and illiteracy are the greatest challenges in process of development.Though India has witnessed tremendous improvement both reducing poverty increasing literacy rate, inter-district variations differentials within different population subgroups still large.Using Census India, 2011 data this paper attempts to understand status also rate among social sub-groups.The census collects information on seven household assets.These used construct wealth index as a proxy for consumption using Principal Component Analysis from variations.The preliminary results show that intra-district large assets possession.India 17.8% households those do not possess any specified with lowest Chennai district Tamil Nadu less than one percent highest Dindori Madhya Pradesh 64.9%.With respect effective status, 73% literate 7 years above.After classifying by poverty, it is found districts tertile was 66.1% compared 80.7% higher tertile.The study positive high correlation 0.611 between score at level.However, there certain which had low despite score.The observed females especially ST far lag behind achieve satisfactory level India.Thus, immediate interventions should be addressed most disadvantaged population.
