ABSTRACT
The U.S. Census Bureau in 2016 developed a testing version of the Internet data collection instrument for 2020 Chinese language to assess its usability among those residents who can read and write but have limited English proficiency. purpose this study was characterize cultural- linguistic-specific issues propose recommendations resolving issues. Thirteen native speakers participated study. Each participant completed Test Instrument alone using laptop or mobile device (a tablet smartphone). A test administrator (TA) used think-aloud protocol while completing instrument, then debriefed with on his her experience instrument. After reviewing audio video recordings TA’s observation debriefing notes, we summarized four categories: sentence-level text presentation, word-level entry, navigation. Based these findings, recommend that future surveys tailor programming sentence structure meaning (syntax semantics) translation be adapted fit survey context.
