ABSTRACT
Background Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, one in two people Africa were food insecure. The burden of malnutrition remains high (e.g. childhood stunting, anaemia women reproductive age) or are increasing overweight and obesity). A range coordinated actions required to improve this situation, including local production consumption. aim review was provide a systematic comprehensive overview recently published research into health, social, economic, environmental impacts community initiatives (CFPIs) Kenya, Cameroon South Africa. Methods We searched eight electronic databases covering environmental, economic agricultural sciences. Primary studies from 1 January 2014 31 December 2018 considered. Data on geographic location, study design, type CFPI assessed abstracted eligible articles. Findings identified 4828 articles, 260 which full-text 118 met our eligibility criteria. Most conducted Kenya (53.4%) (38.1%). categories CFPIs studied (in order decreasing frequency): crop farming, livestock unspecified fisheries, home / school gardens, urban agriculture, agroforestry. largest number CFPIs, followed by their health social impacts. investigated included security, nutrition status dietary intake. One potential impact non-communicable diseases. Over 60% single category impact. Not explicitly used theoretical framework guide its design interpretation. Conclusions Our findings suggest need for greater focus interdisciplinary understanding relationships between Greater use explicit frameworks could assist interpretation, helping ensure relevance informing intersectoral interventions policy initiatives.
