ABSTRACT
Sustained attention fluctuates over time, affecting task-related processing and memory. However, it is less clear how attentional state affects memory when images are accompanied by irrelevant visual information. We first quantify behavioral signatures of in an online sample (N1=92) demonstrate that presented high states better remembered. Next, we test sustained influences two samples (N2=188, N3=185) task-irrelevant present. show leads to for both task-relevant images. This suggests not a selective spotlight, but rather broadly manner akin “floodlight.” Finally, other components such as contribute the mnemonic fate stimuli. Our findings highlight necessity considering characterizing attention’s unique their effects on cognition.
