ABSTRACT
This research examines the influence of family structure and parental relationship quality on young adults' first union formation (marriage cohabitation) from ages 16 to 35. study also whether impact varies significantly by age. Using data National Longitudinal Survey Youth 1997, an event history analysis is conducted address how mechanisms social learning affect timing types formation. shows individual with lower divorce cohabit during adolescence early adulthood leave familial conflict home environment. Furthermore, intact higher between parents are associated a greater likelihood marriage than cohabitation. suggests that affects In contrast, in later stage transition not behavior. Although adults different levels had same rates marriage, marital cohabitating. Adolescents who suffer better socioeconomic status have cohabitating but odds marrying counterparts.
