Anti-hypertensive prescription pattern among general medical practitioners in Kano, Northern Nigeria

ABSTRACT
Background: General medical practitioners are responsible for providing care most hypertensive patients in developing countries, including Nigeria.Concerns have been raised about the pattern of anti-hypertensive medications prescription some countries.Most previous studies that assessedphysicians' patterns were carried out tertiary institutions.The aim this study was to assess non-specialist general Kano State, North-western Nigeria.Methods: This a cross -sectional survey among non -specialist practicing within Nigeria.A total 138 doctors completed questionnaires their demographics, duration and location practice, patterns.Continuous variables presented as mean ± standard deviation.Qualitative expressed proportions percentages.Results: One hundred fourteen (82.6%) directly routinely, with only 31 (22.5%)attending less than 20 per month.Majority (47%) considered thiazide diuretics first choice antihypertensive.Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) commonest used drugs single agent (55.7%) or combination other classes.The frequently combinations ACEIs/ thiazides (43.5%),ACEI/ Calcium channel blockers (CCBs) (24.6%) CCBs/ (8.7%).The factors when prescribing antihypertensive cost (84.7%), side effect profile (68.1%), presence compelling indications contraindications (57.2%), blood pressure at time presentation (56.2%) dosage frequency.Conclusion: The majority is accordance current hypertension treatment guidelines.
