ABSTRACT
The aim of this study was to investigate the interrelationship between urban environment and walking school how teenagers’ perceptions walkability (i.e., friendly an area is walking) constraints affected their mode choice. An advanced hybrid choice model developed in which utilities alternative modes depended on characteristics, socioeconomic weather conditions, built as well a latent variable referring constraints. indicators included regarding existence stray animals, poor lighting, narrow sidewalks, parked cars that obscure visibility, unsignalized intersections, probability attack safety en route. A questionnaire survey took place at high schools three distinct geographic areas Greece (an area, rural insular area) during 2011–2012 basis for case study; 1,988 students aged 12 18 years old participated survey. Adolescents walked greater distance than did adolescents. Model estimation results showed teenagers from each geographical were different ways by conditions they also perceived ways; perception indicates significant sense is. incorporation enhanced explanatory power model, provide insights policies may help Generation Y keep walking.
