Hydrocephalus secondary to cysticercotic arachnoiditis

ABSTRACT
Ninety-two patients with hydrocephalus secondary to cysticercotic meningitis were followed for a mean period of 8 years 11 months. The mortality rate was 50%, most dying within the first 2 after cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunting. prognosis worse in females than males. Multiple surgical procedures shunt obstruction necessary half patients. Complications such as bacterial and more frequent who died those survived. follow-up data revealed that clinical status satisfactory 78% survivors unsatisfactory 22%. Spontaneous remission arachnoiditis, shown by CSF findings, occurred only 18% cases. In patients, arachnoiditis positive immune reactions persisted unchanged even several years. results demonstrate poor outcome these indicate need better medical therapy.
