ABSTRACT
✓ Forty dogs were subjected to 6 hours of occlusion the left internal carotid and middle cerebral arteries. They divided into two “hemodilution groups” 13 each a control “nonhemodiluted group” 14 dogs. Thirty minutes after arterial occlusion, isovolemic hemodilution was performed by phlebotomy infusions low-molecular weight (MW) dextran in one group lactated Ringer's solution other group. The animals sacrificed 1 week temporary occlusion. Hemodilution reduced hematocrit level 33% 34%, which lasted throughout both groups. After there very significant reduction blood viscosity, plasma total protein content, fibrinogen levels groups acute stage; these gradually returned baseline end week. In with hemodilution, osmotic oncotic pressures decreased stage. low-MW groups, pressure remained unaltered resulted slight decrease mean all stage, but no changes central venous, pulmonary arterial, or wedge pressures. During study, differences cardiac index volume between hematological parameters exception increase bleeding time immediately dextran. Daily neurological assessment showed consistently poorer condition during first 5 days compared either receiving Based on Mann-Whitney U-testing, infarct recipients, expressed as percentage that hemisphere (median 15.7%, range 6.6% 25.2%) significantly larger than 2.2%, 0% 15.8%) 11.9%, 39.9%). results indicate that, this model, colloids beneficial, whereas crystalloids deleterious. It is likely observed most important reasons for its detrimental effect.
