ABSTRACT
This paper investigates morphological features of the ice cap and glaciers King George Island (KGI), South Shetlands, Antarctica, mainly to determine variations in glacier front positions from 1956 2000, using maps produced aerial photogrammetric surveys satellite imagery.Glacier were determined three multispectral SPOT images taken 1988SPOT , 1995SPOT 2000.These compared their 1956, photographs.A new digital topographic database, as a basic Geographic Information System (GIS)-layer for environmental monitoring, improves data quality derived previous studies.Seventy drainage basins identified, covering 1044 km 2 (91.5%) KGI present area.General retreat has been observed 44 years, more intensely Admiralty Bay eastern side island.Relatively small masses with subpolar temperate thermal regime, case Shetland Archipelago, may respond rapidly changes atmospheric temperature. Therefore, be related an increase temperature, recorded this region during last 5 decades.
