ABSTRACT
In early March of 2002, a massively-parallel-vector supercomputer, the Earth Simulator, came into operation, providing unique opportunity to perform simulations general circulation global atmosphere with horizontal resolution about 10 km. We employ model called AFES that has been fully optimized architecture attain extremely high com- putational efficiency. The ultra-high are able explicitly represent interaction among planetary, synoptic and meso-scale phenomena topographic modulation mesoscale precipitation without need nest regional model. Examples presented win- tertime extratropical cyclogenesis in North Pacific, polar low over Sea Japan, pre-summer Baiu frontal zone Japan typhoon evolution western show precip- itation systems their interactions planetary scale flows topography indeed sim- ulated fairly realistic manner. Filamentary potential vorticity within an upper-level trough its coupling underlying or polar-low development also simulated.
