Dimensions of Ethnic Boundary-Making: Experiences of Young Muslims and Christians in Religious Transnational Fields in Oslo

ABSTRACT
This article examines the religious transnational orientation among young Muslims and Christians in Oslo. The study draws upon Andreas Wimmer’s (2013) theory of ethnic boundaries to analyse characteristics boundary-making emerge within a field, how social closure, language, ideological framing sociopolitical dimensions contribute boundary-making. data consist 22 qualitative interviews with people between 16 35 years old. shows that most involved activities influenced by multicultural, cosmopolitan ideas interfaith collaborations. Some youths, however, are where there no forms exchange or cooperation other groups. groups use their native language reinforce boundaries, providing link religion nationality. Others establish generational differences parents. As for framing, findings show those efforts emphasize incorporation Islam West. dimension refers classificatory struggles right-wing politicians who argue Europe Norway represent danger Western democracy values.
