ABSTRACT
Introduction The aim of the present study was to investigate occurrence Leishmania infantum in South American coatis inhabiting two forest fragments Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul, Midwest region Brazil, an endemic area human and canine visceral leishmaniasis (VL). Material methods A total 110 were sampled conservation unit “ Parque Estadual Prosa ” (PEP) residential Vila da Base Aérea (VBA) from March 2018 April 2019. As a longitudinal that include up six recaptures same individual, 190 capture events obtained. Blood, bone marrow skin samples obtained for parasitological (axenic culture), serological (Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay – ELISA Dual-path Platform immunoassay DPP ® CVL) molecular diagnostic assays (targeting kDNA spp. L. ; HSP70 followed by sequence analysis). Results Seropositivity found 33 individuals, PEP 27 VBA. Furthermore, detected analysis 16 seven nine We also isolated one individual single positive sample assay other both Discussion An overall infection rate 36.4% (40/110) observed, significantly higher VBA (49.1%) than (21.6%), probably because presents: (i) large number resident dogs chickens would be attracting sandflies; (ii) denser population this wild mammal species; (iii) physical barriers lack functional connectivity surroundings, preventing these animals disperse out. conclude coati populations living urban Grande are affected epidemiological scenario VL, known involve dogs, vectors humans. highlight importance parasitism potential reservoirs inhabit urbanized regions VL.
