ABSTRACT
Molecular identifications based on two mitochondrial markers (cytochrome c oxidase subunit I -COI- and 16S ribosomal RNA gene -16S-) have been implemented to confirm the morphological identification of eight specimens collected in Central western Mediterranean. data show they belonged a recently resurrected species genus Ommastrephes , i.e., O. caroli known be distributed Atlantic Ocean Mediterranean Sea. Despite this, molecular analyses COI sequences evidenced presence potential genetic differentiation between samples, highlighting need for further studies, with more individuals investigate connectivity living areas. Furthermore, morphological, biometric reproductive features here reported, could useful evaluating possible distinctive biological individuals. Female mature size was larger than male. The relationships obtained beak measurements body sizes (DML; TW) were better described by power model. Asynchronous oocytes development relatively small (0.05–1.10 mm) protracted intermittent spawning active feeding observed. This study also reported specie first fecundity estimated (840061 oocytes), oviducal load (90000 ripe oocytes) as well number seminal receptacles morphology spermatangia found buccal mass all mated females. Even if low sample size, beaks eye lenses used time age estimation. statistically significant relationship increments counted highlighted reliability estimate even studies will needed its validation. Assuming daily increment both structures, mean life span about 12–13 months sexes, which is consistent sexual maturity condition observed samples semelparity cephalopods coleoids.
