Clinical profile and treatment outcome of acute intussusception among children in eastern Ethiopia: A seven years retrospective study

ABSTRACT
Acute intussusception is the main cause of abdominal surgical emergencies worldwide in young children, with an incidence approximately 1 to 4 per 2,000 children. An accurate estimate treatment outcomes acute children unknown low-and middle-income countries like Ethiopia. Hence, this study aimed determine clinical profile, and its associated factors among admitted Hiwot Fana Specialized University Hospital eastern Ethiopia.An institutional-based retrospective cross-sectional was conducted from November 01 30, 2021, managed for intussusception. All medical records at hospital between January 2014 December 2020 were included. Data collected using pretested structured checklists through a review records, entered analyzed Statistical Package Social Sciences version 25.0. Chi-square (χ2) tests applied outcome. The statistical significance considered p-value < 0.05.In chart 13.3% (95% CL: 11.8-14.8) died. median age participant 13 months. majority, 72% male 76% less than 24 months old. Regarding profile; pain (94.7%), vomiting (93.3%), bloody diarrhea (70.7%), distention (76.0%) most common presentations. Age [X2 = 8.13 (df 1); p 0.004], preoperative vital signs 19.21 2); 0.000], intraoperative findings 18.89 postoperative complications 14.60 0.000] significantly outcome intussusception.In review, overall mortality rate relatively high. One seven died months, signs, findings, outcomes. Surgical management only performed all cases. Delayed presentation patients lack other modalities such as non-surgical interventions are serious concerns facility. initiation reduction may reduce need intervention-related complications, child mortality.
