Animal-and mineral-based medicines in Gansu-Ningxia-inner Mongolia region, P.R. China: a cross-cultural ethnobiological assessment

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Traditional animal- and mineral-based medicines are widely used in the Gansu-Ningxia-Inner Mongolia junction zone, a region with diverse ethnic groups cultures. This study aims to document, conserve, explore potential of these for further research sustainable development medicine. Methods: We interviewed 56 informants from different backgrounds analyzed their responses quantitatively. Additionally, comparative analysis adjacent regions was conducted, providing invaluable contextual insights. Results: The unveiled array traditional zone. A total 47 animal-based were identified, ranging insects scorpios distinctive animal organs. Of notable significance Moschus, emerging as pivotal Chinese medicine resource. In parallel, 12 cataloged, procured both locally "pharmacies". Female informants, frequently local herbal practitioners, demonstrated broader knowledge medicines. 13 villages revealed varying perceptions importance, underscoring wealth knowledge. Specific medicines, such Feng-Mi Xie-Zi, valued healthcare practices cultural medicinal benefits. Conclusion: provides comprehensive overview It highlights need preserving applying manner. also lays solid foundation future on medicine, which can contribute holistic wellbeing communities.
