ABSTRACT
Populus not only has significant economic and ecological values, but also serves as a model tree that is widely used in the basic research of growth, physiology, genetics. However, high levels morphological variation extensive interspecific hybridization pose an obstacle for taxonomy, to understanding phylogenetic relationships biogeographical history. In this study, total 103 accessions representing almost all wild species were collected whole-genome re-sequenced examine biogeography On basis 12,916,788 nuclear single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), we reconstructed backbone phylogenies using concatenate coalescent methods, highly disentangled Populus, several problematic taxa treated complexes. Furthermore, phylogeny chloroplast genome showed discordance with trees from data, due capture species, plastomes could accurately evaluate interspecies relationships. Ancient gene flow between clades some events identified by ABBA-BABA analysis. The reconstruction chronogram ancestral distributions suggested North America was original region genus, subsequent long dispersal migration across land bridges contributed modern range Populus. diversification mainly occurred East Asia recent 15 Ma, possibly promoted uplift Tibetan Plateau. This study provided comprehensive evidence on proposed four-subgeneric classification new status, subgenus Abaso. Meanwhile, distribution data advanced biogeographic history
