Sense or sensibility—Ideological dilemmas in gamblers' notions of responsibilities for gambling problems

ABSTRACT
The gambling market is a complex field of conflicting stakeholders and interests involving dimensions, such as economy, health, social inequality morals. division responsibility between gamblers, the industry regulating state for limiting harmful effects this activity, however, are unclear. aim study was to explore how gamblers in Swedish attribute various actors within field. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 37 experiencing extensive problems. Based on discourse analytical approach, five ideological dilemmas identified, highlighting tension the, often contradictory, values that participants need relate to. On individual level, emphasize their own problem, thereby showing accountability relation themselves, significant others peers agents recovery. corporate- levels argue stronger public health where companies should take further by living up legal regulations ensure compliance safeguard funding treatment research. essential paradox self-regulation prevailing medical gambler's incapacity self-control signifies an impossible equation imposes feelings guilt shame upon who concurrently considered both responsible incapable. In order reduce harm, must be more proactive coercive external control measures fulfill duty care they claim adhere to, its compliance.
