ABSTRACT
Introduction Mood stabilisers and other psychotropic drugs can lead to serious adverse drug events (ADEs). However, the incidence remains unknown. We aimed (a) determine of ADEs in patients with bipolar or schizoaffective disorders, (b) explore role lithium exposure, (c) describe aetiology. Methods This study is part LiSIE (Lithium—Study into Effects Side Effects) retrospective cohort study. Between 2001 2017, Swedish region Norrbotten, a diagnosis disorder, were screened for drugs, having resulted critical, post-anaesthesia, intensive care. determined rate ADEs/1,000 person-years (PY). Results In 1,521 patients, we identified 41 ADEs, yielding an 1.9 per 1,000 PY. The ratio (IRR) between present causally implicated without exposure was significant at 2.59 (95% CI 1.20–5.51; p = 0.0094). IRR <65 ≥65 years 3.36 1.63–6.63; 0.0007). most common chronic intoxication, oversedation, cardiac/blood pressure-related events. Discussion Serious related treatment (BD) disorder (SZD) uncommon but not rare. Older individuals particularly risk. risk higher exposed lithium. Serum concentration should always be checked when new unclear somatic symptoms. severe also occurred mood drugs.
