ABSTRACT
Cluster seizures (CS) and status epilepticus (SE) in dogs are severe neurological emergencies that require immediate treatment. Practical guidelines call for constant rate infusion (CRI) of benzodiazepines or propofol (PPF) patients with not responding to first-line treatment, but date only few studies have investigated the use CRI epilepsy.Retrospective clinical study.Dogs received diazepam (DZP) PPF antiepileptic treatment during hospitalization at Veterinary Teaching Hospital University Turin CS SE between September 2016 December 2019 were eligible inclusion. Favorable outcome was defined as cessation clinically visible seizure activity within minutes from initiation CRI, no recurrence 24 h after discontinuation through hospital discharge, recovery. Poor despite death because recurrent seizures, catastrophic consequences prolonged return an acceptable baseline, apparent control activity. Comparisons number favorable those poor relation type etiology, reason presentation (CS SE), sex, previous AED therapy dose carried out.A total 37 dogs, 50 instances administered included study. 29/50 (58%) 21/50 (42%) hospitalization, respectively. Idiopathic epilepsy diagnosed 21/37 (57%), (13/21 tier I 8/21 II); structural 6/37 (16%) which 4/6 confirmed 2/6 suspected. A metabolic toxic cause recorded 7/37 (19%). 38/50 (76%) hospitalizations noted 12/50 (24%) SE. In 30/50 (60%) patient responded well activity, whereas a 20/50 (40%) cases (DZP 8/50). Comparison sex out statistically significant differences found. The present study is first document administration DZP large sample epilepsy. The medications appeared be tolerated without major side effects helped most regardless etiology. Further needed evaluate duration on complications.
