ABSTRACT
PVC and balsa wood are usually used in the interlayer structures of wind turbine blades. In this paper, a comparative study on lightning damage characteristics two materials was carried out by molecular dynamic simulations impact current experiments. The show that glycosidic bonds cellulose break first, which leads to strong decrease degree polymerization (DP) (while DP changes irregularly), then C−O pyranoid ring main chain is destroyed, producing small molecule fractions lot gas molecules. There steps pyrolysis PVC. H Cl atoms fall off combined for form HCl, needs less energy occurs earlier than at 2000 K, but generates more products same temperature. Thus damages mainly appear as fiber fractures pore extension, respectively, consistent with morphological features experimental results also temperature lower wood, residual strength decreases faster increase peak current. This should play an important guiding role protection material selection
