ABSTRACT
Traditionally, opioid-related disease burden was primarily due to heroin use. However, increases in extra-medical (or non-medicinal use of prescription opioids; NMPOs) has precipitated the current overdose epidemic North America. We aim examine state-level prevalence and NMPO dependence their associations with mortality socio-demographic profiles. Data were pooled from 2005–2014 National Survey on Drug Use Health (NSDUH). CDC WONDER (Cause Death database) by past year DSM-IV dependence, age sex, characteristics census data. State-level rates associated death young mid-aged adults, while across all ages. The positively GDP/capita urbanity. higher unemployment, lower GDP/capita, a high-school completion rate. are broad range geographical groups. Taking wider view populations affected opioid epidemic, inclusive interventions for needed reduce burden.
