ABSTRACT
In the course of digitalization, new technologies and innovations are continuously introduced to educational sector. For instance, augmented reality (AR) is increasingly applied in science teaching both school higher education. Combining real virtual content potentially enhances interactivity understanding learning process. This approach can positively impact various outcomes, such as gains motivation. paper aims investigate positive effects AR using a game-based environment: “Beat Beast”. line with concept an education for sustainable development (ESD) topic, microplastics, this environment follows interdisciplinary approach, combining subjects biology, chemistry, engineering. To determine distinguish implementing technology environments well principles learning, we contrasted into two factors: one without other game game. A quasi-experimental design 203 pre-service teachers first semester all was chosen evaluate four different types settings questionnaires on motivation, acceptance, user engagement, cognitive load, computer self-efficacy, knowledge, ESD outcomes Our research demonstrates that although imposes relatively elevated it does not negatively affect effects. spite increased learners do exhibit lesser knowledge acquisition compared those alternative environments. Moreover, our investigation highlights AR’s potential amplify motivation engagement. Contrary expectations, context selected subject matter target audience, adaptations fail enhance outcomes. These versions actually underperform formats motivational engagement metrics.
