ABSTRACT
PURPOSETo evaluate the 20-year prognosis of endodontically treated/re-treated teeth in a population with multiple patient/tooth/site risk factors, and to investigate prognostic factors that could predict long-term outcome endodontic therapy. MATERIALS AND METHODSThis ambispective cohort study included patients who received primary/secondary root canal therapy from 1986 1998 performed by single operator private practice.Outcomes measures were: tooth survival; clinical radiographic success, as assessed treating clinician an independent assessor; complications, evaluated 20 years after treatment.Descriptive statistics, life table Cox regression analyses for survival were fitted.RESULTS Four hundred eleven (59% affected advanced periodontitis) 1169 treated identified (703 treatment, 466 retreatment).Dropouts at follow-up 128 (31.1%) 388 (33.2%) teeth.Forty (3.4%) 30 experienced subsequently successfully treated.Clinical evaluation revealed: complete success 542 (69.7%), partial 10 (1.3%), failure 75 (9.6%),and 151 (19.4%) (10 extracted reasons, 58 due periodontitis, vertical fracture).Life analysis revealed 86% follow-up.The chance decreased increasing patient age (P = 0.006).Re-treated had better than 0.024) Canines premolars chances incisors 0.002 P 0.015, respectively).Teeth two sittings (with intermediate medication) reduced compared one sitting 0.027).Teeth first time reasons exhibited periodontal prosthetic 0.012). CONCLUSIONSThe part multidisciplinary rehabilitation periodontitis is good.Aging, two-stage treatment non-endodontic are important predictors failure.
