ABSTRACT
Objective
To observe the brain regions activated during calculation in patients with left temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and normal subjects.
Methods
Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was applied. Sixteen right-handed persons TLE were selected as group, sixteen healthy volunteers recruited a control group. The fMRI data collected each subject performed simple additions, subtractions abdication subtractions. Statistical parametric mapping used to compare between two groups.
Results
The error rate calculations significantly higher their average reaction time longer. There aslo significant differences groups terms of activation patterns. Compared group exhibited hypo-activity such paracentral lobule, posterior central gyrus, bilateral inferior parietal angular supramarginal middle frontal superior also cingulate, insular right hippocampus, parahippocampal thalamus cerebellum. subjects hyper-activity anterior well right, gyrus.
Conclusion
Our results support functional reorganization calculation-related neuronal networks within hemispheres patients. lobes may play compensatory role function. Task-related technology can provide useful information for non-invasive assessment mathematical computing cognitive function patients.
