ABSTRACT
Infectious complications in febrile neutropenic patients are still major causes of morbidity and mortality despite significant advances diagnostic techniques antimicrobial therapy. In this study, we describe the characteristics with hematological malignancies who were evaluated for suspected infection. This study was also conducted to assess isolation rate bacterial fungal causative agents attacks. The at Pamukkale University Hospital, Turkey. order identify presence/suspicion any accompanying infectious disease, patients' charts reviewed signs/symptoms infection between October 1, 2001, May 31, 2005, retrospectively.Overall, 90 episodes occurred 59 patients. The most common underlying diseases acute myelogenous leukemia (61.0%) lymphocytic (15.3%). absolute neutrophil count lower than 100/mm(3) 33 (36.7%) episodes. Microbiologically clinically documented infections fever unknown origin observed 35.6%, 28.9%, 35.6% participants, respectively. Bloodstream pneumonia detected 21.1% 18.9% episodes, Gram negative organisms (58.4%), followed by gram positive cocci. A combination third generation cephalosporin an aminoglycoside used 44.4% initially. Fever resolved 24.4% using initial 15.6%.These results showed that gram-negative bacteria continue predominate neutopenic our center.
