ABSTRACT
Background. Despite the great attention that has been paid to HRQoL in children with respiratory allergy, few studies have addressed this aspect relation caregivers. The aim of our study was evaluate impact childhood allergies on caregivers by means a new method. Methods. 119 parents suffering from (75 asthma and 44 rhinitis) were recruited three Italian Allergy Units. Parents asked complete Disease Impact On Caregiver (DIOC), non disease specific questionnaire, validated population. questionnaire consists 31 items grouped four factors (Performance, Personal gratification, Psychophysical endurance, Socio-emotional domain) covers life aspects could be affected assistance duties towards an ill family member. Results. Child’s resulted worse many parents’ than rhinitis. Differences statistically significant 19 out assessed. versus rhinitis confirmed following domains: Performance (24.0±18.2 vs 11.5±17.8), gratification (26.3±20.5 12.1±16.5) endurance (35.0±24.8 18.8±21.7). In domain no difference emerged. Conclusions. Compared rhinitics, asthmatic appear more compromised their resistance stress, mood, emotional stability, amount spare time leisure activities. Our results suggest need giving due these problems both clinical practice research, order avoid possible interferences caregiver’s distress optimization treatment outcome.
