ABSTRACT
Article Abstract Objective: Clozapine and olanzapine treatment has been associated with insulin resistance in nonobese schizophrenia patients. Much less is known regarding other agents such as quetiapine. The objective of this study was to compare matched olanzapine- quetiapine-treated patients normal controls on measures glucose metabolism. Method: A cross-sectional comparison olanzapine-treated (body mass index < 30.0 kg/m2) subjects (DSM-IV) using a frequently sampled intravenous tolerance test nutritional assessment conducted from April 2002 October 2004. Data 24 were included the analysis (7 quetiapine, 8 olanzapine, 9 controls). Results: There significant difference among groups for fasting baseline plasma concentrations (p = .02), greater than .01). sensitivity (SI) differed significantly .039); exhibited compared .01), but there no quetiapine versus .1) or .40). SI inversely correlated dose .0001) waist circumference .03) subjects. Insulin calculated by homeostasis model (HOMA-IR) also .03). group had higher HOMA-IR level effectiveness (SG) .049). SG lower Conclusions: Our findings are consistent our previous report that - treated showed resistance, measured both HOMA IR SI, reduction SG. Studies include larger samples, unmedicated patients, varying durations antipsychotic exposure necessary confirm these results.
