ABSTRACT
Background and Aims: Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a major cause of morbidity mortality among patients in the Intensive Care Units (ICUs) results added healthcare costs. One methods preventing VAP to use polyurethane (PU)-cuffed endotracheal tube (ETT). This study compares incidence length ICU stay intubated with conventional polyvinyl chloride (PVC) ETT PU-cuffed ETT. Methods: Eighty post-laparotomy who were mechanically ventilated for >48 h included this randomised controlled trial. Patients moderate severe pre-existing lung conditions excluded from study. group PVC (n = 40) PVC-cuffed those PU was defined as Clinical Pulmonary Infection Score >6 positive quantitative culture on ventilator h. Results: Overall rates 23.75%. Thirteen (32.5%) six (15%) developed VAP. significantly lesser (group PU) (median, 6 days; range: 4–8.5) compared PVC) 8; 6–11). Conclusion: No statistically significant reduction could be found between groups. The ultra thin ETTs.
