Survey of knowledge-attitude-practice concerning insulin use in adult diabetic patients in eastern India

ABSTRACT
<b>Objectives:</b> The study was conducted to assess knowledge, attitude, and practice regarding insulin use among diabetic patients in tertiary care hospitals. <br> <b>Materials Methods:</b> Type 1 2 patients, aged 18 years above, attending the Medicine/Endocrinology out-patient department or admitted as in-patients three hospitals around Kolkata were enrolled. A pretested structured questionnaire comprising of 51 items administered through face-to-face interview. Responses from 385 subjects analyzed. <b>Results:</b> Both higher educational economic standards associated with better understanding use. Longer duration diabetes its treatment (oral anti-diabetic drugs insulin) knowledge some parameters. Female less aware HbA <sub>1c</sub> a monitoring tool. Among current users, 70% had never used glucometer; only 27.33% carried simple carbohydrates for hypoglycemic attacks; 32% failed rotate sites injection. <b>Conclusion:</b> Knowledge attitude satisfactory on whole but deficiencies pronounced, which can potentially be removed appropriate counseling.
