An epidemiological study concerning pneumococcal LRTI in rural parts of Bengal and influence of socioenvironmental parameters on it

ABSTRACT
Background: Lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) is a major public health problem. One of the agents causing community acquired pneumonia Streptococcus pneumoniae, or pneumococcus. This study was aimed to correlate between socio-environmental parameters and incidence LRTI (by s0 pneumoniae ) in rural parts West Bengal. Materials Methods: A house survey made sputum samples were collected from persons having features lower infection. The background patients taken detail. pneumococci isolated tested for antibiotic susceptibility. Results: Out 947 collected, 70 (4.77%) positive S pneumoniae. 15.71% found be resistant penicillin. Highest occur summer months, living narrow spaces houses polluted with smoke. Conclusion: Although low percentage among Bengal, many strains showed resistance penicillin erythromycin. That thing concern itself. Better conditions regarding household proper smoke outlet facility would have good impact bringing down this area, where people are already burdened lack facilities living.
