ABSTRACT
Atherosclerosis is a leading cause of death worldwide. The adverse side effects currently available drugs urge to find more effective and safe remedial agents. Alternative candidates from natural resources are great consequence in the emerging new drugs. Pandanus tectorius (Pandanaceae) was traditionally used Ayurvedic medicine cure certain diseases. Thus, current study conducted elucidate potency P. fruit as antiatherosclerosis antihypercholesterolemia agents through regulation high density lipoprotein (HDL) receptor (scavenger [SR]-B1) gene expression 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase (HMGCR) vitro, respectively. noncytotoxic against HepG2 cell line confirmed by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl) 2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide assay. successfully upregulates SR-B1 downregulate HMGCR. Moreover, an vivo showed that has good activity on upregulation HDL subsequently downregulation total cholesterol level. did not show any increase toxicity biomarkers serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase glutamate pyruvate vivo. These results found fruits have preventive agent for hypercholesterolemia atherosclerosis via HMGCR mechanisms action.
