Anticonvulsants use in traumatic brain injury

ABSTRACT
Objective. Verifying the indications for use of anticonvulsants in patients suffering from traumatic brain injury (TBI), evaluating harms and benefits using different anticonvulsant drugs described. Method. Literature review was performed MEDLINE SciELO databases terms: “Post Traumatic Epilepsy”, “Cra­niocerebral Trauma”, “Anticonvulsants”, “Post-Traumatic “Craniocerebral trauma “and” Anticonvulsants “. Studies focusing both prophylactic therapeutic TBI were included. The most relevant articles by number citations that resulted research selected comprised between years 1980 2014. Results. Several authors have studied prophylaxis or therapy TBI. Some au­thors demonstrated risk developing post seizures relation to type presented severity trauma. Conclusion. Most show no benefit perform­ing more than seven days after More randomized trials with a significant sample should be conducted order compare effect antiepileptic treatment posttraumatic epilepsy its impact on quality life these also mor­bidity mortality same.
