Are High School Students Ready to Stop the Bleed from Injuries? Needs Assessment in a Low Resource Country

ABSTRACT
Background: Life-threatening bleeding is a major cause of trauma-related deaths. Stop the Bleed—Active control (ABC) program in Hyderabad recently showed that lay first responders can be effectively trained. However, willingness high school students to train unknown. We report Bleed training needs assessment from schools India and estimate potential multiplier effect. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted 12 randomly selected Hyderabad. The study understand current knowledge, skills get trained respond life-threatening injuries. 107 Participants (35 Teachers 72 students) were purposively for telephonic interviews with structured questionnaire. Results: Response rate 93% overall. 80% participants have never been control. 84% reported trained, others help victims. All teachers stop bleed would useful schools. 70.6% recommended could start middle (10 15 years), 47% preferred online mode. Only 20% had prior lifesaving aid 32% did not know number emergency medical services (EMS). Each participant has 3 4 people at household level perhaps more community level. Conclusion: surveyed do skills, or curriculum Bleed. Students are willing others, great “multiplier-effect” community.
