ABSTRACT
Objective: To investigate the effectiveness of ultrasound-guided central venous catheterization when compared to conventional procedure. Method: A prospective cohort study was carried out over a 9-month period from February October 2016 involving 144 inpatients at PICU Irmandade da Santa Casa de Sao Paulo Hospital, undergoing catheterization. The patients were matched in pairs identical according levels potentially intervening variables (age, nutritional status, puncture site, professional experience), differing only as CVC technique: (USG-CVC) or (C-CVC). Discarding data non-paired patients, remaining did forming 47 pairs, two related samples: USG-CVC and C-CVC groups. Success parameters: number attempts; time spent CVC; success rate complications. Results: In group, attempts (mean = 2.04) 11.89 minutes) lower (t 2.34, df 46, t 0.95 2.02, p 3.07, F (1, 46) 16.6; Q (1) 12.5, 3.76; 3.56, > 0.05) considering several attempts. Complications found less frequently group (3/47) than CVC-C (13/47), (F 8.24; 7.14,
