Treatment of chronic Chagas' disease with itraconazole and allopurinol.

ABSTRACT
Four hundred four patients with chronic Chagas' disease were treated itraconazole (6 mg/kg of body weight/day for 120 days), allopurinol (8.5 60 or a placebo pure starch. Patients monitored over period years by clinical examination, serology, xenodiagnosis, hemoculture, and electrocardiogram. Drug tolerance was good, only treatments discontinued due to side effects that subsided after suspension treatment. Parasitologic cure evident in 44% the those 53% itraconazole, electrocardiographic evaluation showed normalization 36.5% 48.2%, respectively, recent cardiopathy.
