Findings from seven years (1993-1999) efforts also yielded regional profiles importance cholera both epidemic and sporadic diarrheal disease occurrence throughout archipelago. A two-fold strategy pursued involving 1) outbreak investigations, 2) hospital-based case recognition. Rectal swabs were transported Jakarta for culture isolates characterized by serotypic identification. Outbreak findings showed that V. O1, Ogawa serotype, predominant etiology all 17 instances investigated transmission. Monitoring eight hospitals representing provinces provided 6,882 specimens, which 9% positive cholerae: 589 (9%) O1 20 (< 1%) non-O1 strains. Proportional representation among cases illness variable, ranging 13% < 1% Batam. Overall, 98% There no instance serotype either or form. Anti-microbial drug susceptibility consistently demonstrated, temporally spatially, except against colistin. Evidence is western associated with periods low rainfall. Conversely, more eastern portion country, heavy rainfall may have contributed
