ABSTRACT
Alveolar echinococcosis (AE), caused by Echinococcus multilocularis, is a zoonotic helminthic disease that can mimic malignancy. In the 1970s, foci of were found in central China. The aim present study was to estimate prevalence AE humans 2 districts south Gansu Province, China, use ultrasound and serology. After answering an epidemiological questionnaire, 2,482 volunteers from 28 villages underwent ultrasound. Serology via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for antibody activity performed on whole blood collected filter paper all subjects; serum subjects with abnormal image; randomly chosen either had no lesions or atypical lesions. At least one (25.3%) image observed 630 screened. A typical lesion progressive 84 (3.4%). Serologies positive 77 (96%) 80 patients who AE. Ultrasound useful screening endemic regions.
