Histopathological investigation of onychomycosis frequency in psoriatic nails using periodic acid-Schiff staining

ABSTRACT
Background and Design: Psoriasis nail involvement is clinically similar to onychomycosis.Especially subungual hyperkeratosis onycholysis are also common in both diseases.These two diseases may be seen separetely or together.The aim of this study was compare the frequency onychomycosis with control group patients psoriasis determine factors predisposing psoriasis. Materials Methods:The included 43 who were admitted İstanbul Medipol Mega University, Clinic Dermatology between 2017 2018 did not have had dystrophy.Participants received systemic corticosteroid, methotrexate, cyclosporine, antifungal treatment 4 months ago topical weeks excluded from study.The samples examined histochemically periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) stain.Results: Onychomycosis detected 11 (25.6%) (hand and/or foot), while 17 (39.5%) group.There no statistically significant difference groups (p=0.170).In group, toe significantly higher than psoriatic (p=0.024).It noteworthy that high educational level low Area Severity Index (p<0.05 p=0.021, respectively). Conclusion:In study, we determined a risk factor for by histopathological examination fungal PAS staining.
