ABSTRACT
Abstract Background Professional organizations have called for individualized training approaches, as well opportunities resident scholarship, to ensure that internal medicine residents sufficient knowledge and experience make informed career choices. Context Purpose To address these issues within the University of California, San Francisco, program, we created Areas Distinction (AoD) program supplement regular clinical duties with specialized curricula designed engage in research, global health, health equities, medical education, molecular medicine, or physician leadership. We describe our AoD present this initiative's evaluation data. Methods Program Evaluation evaluated features including enrollment, satisfaction, recruitment surveys, quantity scholarly products, results resident's certifying examination scores. Finally, described costs implementing maintaining AoDs. Results enrollment increased from 81% 98% during past 5 years. Both quantitative qualitative data demonstrated a positive effect on improved satisfaction number breadth presentations without an adverse board certification pass rate. Conclusions The system led favorable outcomes domains recruitment, performance. Our intervention showed can successfully obtain while engaging education beyond bounds core training.
