Pattern of HADS-Anxiety score among Medical Outpatients in Enugu, Nigeria

ABSTRACT
Background: Symptoms of anxiety disorders vary widely among physically ill patients. Early detection and treatment will reduce the economic burden common medical provide empirical data for public health educators policy makers development guidelines workers care givers. Objectives: The objective present study was to determine correlates predictors symptoms based on Hospital depression scores patients attending outpatient clinic in a Tertiary hospital Enugu South East Nigeria. Methods: This cross sectional conducted at Medical Outpatient Clinic State University Teaching Hospital, Nigeria. All consecutive consenting were recruited. Anxiety explored using Depression Scale. Study duration 6 months. Statistical analyses one SPSS version 22. Results: A total 512 (males 190(37.1%), females 322 (62.9%)) individuals Significant (≥ 8) reported by 16(3.1%) patients; similar males females. P=0.51. symptoms, negatively correlated with age (r=-0.14, p< 0.01) positively use alternative/herbal medication (r=0.16, p < 0.001), having arthritis (r=0.11, p=0.01), stroke, (r=0.09, p=0.04), chronic headache r=0.11, p=0.01 peptic ulcer disease p=0.04). Younger significant predictor scores. p=0.03. Conclusion: Several modifiable non-modifiable factors correlate out Enugu. There is need involve mental practitioners education outpatients.
