ABSTRACT
Respiratory diseases have a great impact in the swine production industry. Macroscopic lesions lungs are often detected during routine post-mortem inspection slaughterhouse, with enzootic pneumonia-like (EP-like lesions) and pleuritic being most common. EP-like lesions, which primary related Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae infection, characterised by consolidation areas, demarcated purple or grey areas lungs. Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae is respiratory pathogen suggestive associated previous infections of this agent commonly chronic pleurisy located dorso-caudal regions from This type lesion evaluated Slaughterhouse Pleurisy Evaluation System (SPES). The aim study was to determine occurrence 2,142 finishing pigs 18 different farms (central Portugal, southern northern Spain), association between pleurisies, relationship pluck (lobe scars, emphysema, lung congestion, pericarditis, liver milk spots steatosis) gut (splenitis, pancreatitis, enteritis). For purpose, were classified per lobe under method pneumonia–like lesions. SPES score method. presence other such as spots, splenitis, lymphadenitis, enteritis also evaluated. Descriptive multivariate logistic regression analyses carried out. A variable considered statistically significant when its P-value≤ 0.05, i.e. 95% confidence interval Odds Ratio (OR) does not contain 1. Among sample, 41.1% presented (20.5% registered scored 1–3, 20.7% 4–24). Around 12% sample pleurisy, 4.8% degree 4 level. Following pericarditis frequent (4.8% and3.6%, respectively). In study, affected lobes medial cranial lobes. higher score, lower incidence presenting an (OR=0.38, P<0.001). scores, category 1 (OR=0.86, P=0.031) 2 (OR=0.71, P<0.0001). Pericarditis scores (OR=8.57, P<0.001), (OR=7.29, (OR=26.55, Consolidated pneumonia common cause partial rejection for human consumption, followed spot pericarditis. reinforces importance monitoring findings pig carcasses at slaughterhouse. It advantageous assess animal’s performance welfare. Moreover, closely tissues organs economic value, can be subclinical difficult diagnose live animals. Furthermore, best our knowledge, only kind out Portugal.
